I love when Murano glass has some texture. This wonderful square shaped piece has divine gold leaf and 24 carat gold dust within crystal glass so it captures the light so beautifully. This is a showpiece that is daring and sexy. It would love gorgeous in an entryway or on a coffee table to create some drama.
Murano has been a trading port as early as the 7th centry. It is believed that glassmaking in Murano originated in 8th century Rome, with significant Asian and Muslim influences, as Venice was a major trading port, Murano’s reputation as a center for glassmaking was born when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and destruction of the city’s mostly wooden buildings, ordered glassmakers to move their foundries to Murano in 1291. Glass makers became very influential and valuable to the region…so much so that if they left the area it was punishable by death.
