Blue and Gold Sommerso Murano Glass Bowl/Ashtray and Vase c 1960’s

I think the chunky look of Sommerso glass is wonderful with its various layers and strong shapes. I love the way the various facets pick up and reflect light so well. Blue and gold go with any décor and this pair will easily bring fantastic light, color and texture to a room. The hexagonal organic shapes are timeless.

It is believed that glassmaking in Murano originated in 8th century Rome, with significant Asian and Muslim influences, as Venice was a major trading port. Murano’s reputation as a center for glassmaking was born when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and destruction of the city’s mostly wooden buildings, ordered glassmakers to move their foundries to Murano in 1291.
